On Monday the 25th of April 2016, me, Aliya, Fabrice, Victor, Esli and Tom Ekman all went to San Pedrito, a surfing beach where you can camp right after the agricole fields. Before we got to San Pedrito, we prepared at school what we were going to do. When we arrived at San Pedrito, we had a little more of an explanation : we were going to walk in straight lines walking North to South and all of us were aligned from East to West. When we started, we were collecting data on how much plastic, metal, other garbage, TP (for Toilet Paper), feces, fire charcoal, fire ring, large plant, small one, ant, flying insect and lizard. We did it 3 times. First we walked S to N then N to S. Third we went E to W while collecting data. I thought that there were going to be more plastic than anything else and it was the case.
We left at 1:53 PM.
Today, we went to San Pedrito to do a survey. We divided the place in 3 transects. We were 2 meters away from each other. Tom gave us a paper for counting plastic, metal, other trash, toilet paper, feces, fire... With this paper, we started to walk in a straight lines, the first transect, counting the trash that we saw and then we did the same with the other two transects. We also did a marine survey and saw that there was almost no life: only dead crabs, shells and fish.
We would like to understand why life disappeared from this site, to see if it's linked to the flood that occurred ten years ago, and all the human activity... Our hope is that once we have studied these impacts, we can come up with a plan of action so that the Sierra School can bring life back to San Pedrito.
